History and Overview of CASME

CASME is an Education Development NGO based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. The Centre focuses on physical and biological science, mathematics and technology education. The project was initiated by Shell and the then University of Natal in 1985.

CASME’S APPROACH TO THE SUSTAINABILITY OF SCIENCE EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

International Congress on Mathematical Education

The 11th ICME (the International Congress on Mathematical Education) conference was held in Monterrey Mexico July 6 - 13, 2008. Around 4000 professionals from the mathematics education area attended the conference from 100 countries.
 
Dinaledi Spring School - Exam Preparation

From 12 to 14 September 2008, CASME and the KZN Department of Education's MST&ICT Directorate hosted 240 Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Sciences educators for a weekend spring exam preparation school.
 
Bearing Man Funded Umgungundlovu Project Launched

On Tuesday 4 November 2008, the Umgungundlovu FET College and the Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education (CASME) officially launched a partnership aimed at assisting schools in the Pietermaritzburg district to improve the quality of science and mathematics teaching.

Dinaledi winter school goes ahead...

The KwaZulu Natal contingent of the Dinaledi schools were hosted by CASME at a Winter School in July at Edgewood. 74 Educators from the 23 Dinaledi Schools spent the week learning, developing their skills and sharing experiences.
 
JULA TEACHERS AT THE EMSCEP AWARDS

Dr Mathume Bopape and Mrs Thula Sithole of CASME, joined the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Mosibudi Mangena, the MEC for Education in KZN Mr Narend Singh, CEO of Eskom Development Foundation Ms Mabel Makibelo, Chief Regional Director Dr Mpofana and the Mayor of Newcastle Rev. Dlamini at an awards ceremony in Newcastle on the 23 October 2003. The awards recognised the commitment and effort of the teachers participating in an Eskom Development Foundation initiative for mathematics and science educators in Ladysmith.
 
Discovering Geometry

Mathematics Educators were treated to a personal copy of Discovering Geometry (published by Key Curriculum Press) courtesy of US donors. The donation was facilitated and made possible by Daniel Krupandan, Prof. Michael De Villiers and our own Themba Mthonti. Thanks also to Dumisani Mdaka and Chris Msibi for assisting with the pick-up.
 
South Coast Visitor Does Justice to Jula!

Mzwandile Justice Nxumalo is a Mathematics Educator from Kwabhavu High School in Mzinto on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast. His decision to pay a visit to the CASME Resource Centre in Durban to borrow some Mathematics videos led him on an exciting Professional Development journey. When Mzwandile arrived at Edgewood the buzz created by the Winter School got him asking questions from the organisers.

CASME Mathematics Advancement Project

CASME and SAA give flight to Dinaledi Initiative

A theoretical framework of the pH concept at high school

Literature shows that the concept of pH face conceptual challenges, especially outside the 0-14 range that it requires further debate. The concern of this discussion is the aspects of pH taught at school. I suggest how best to teach pH in such a way that pH values outside the normal 0 – 14 range are understood and speculate on what negative pH values could mean. The discussion does NOT provide an authoritative understanding of pH, that chemistry gurus might have.

Donor Appreciation Breakfast

Friday 18 April saw CASME host its first Donor Appreciation Breakfast. Other than honouring those companies, foundations and government programmes that have supported our work over the past year, the purpose of the event was also to encourage a networking spirit amongst our various stakeholders. We were very keen to have our donors talk amongst themselves and share their experience of working with CASME.
 
National Science Week 2008

This year CASME decided on a slightly different approach to its National Science Week activties. Whereas in the past we have designed a two or three day programme of activities which have then been rolled out at two of our resource centres in the KZN Province, this year we opted for a streamlined programme that would have much wider reach.

Launch of Jula! education project

The official launch of the Jula! Maths and Science Teacher Development Project took place at the University’s Edgewood campus in July. The project, which is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, is implemented for the University of Natal by CASME (Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education) in partnership with the Department of Education.
 
Ms Shezi shines as CASME's star in Shell 'Humanity'

Shell South Africa, in celebration of it’s centenary, has launched a promotional campaign highlighting its development and social responsibility programmes. The campaign called ‘humanity’, reflects the contribution made by the company to educational, environmental and social development in South Africa. Guidelines for Using the Resource Centre

The resources and equipment at the centres are specifically for teachers of Physical Science, Biology and Mathematics in Standard 8, 9 & 10. If you teach a different subject or level you are still welcome to use the resources but we cannot guarantee that they will be exactly what you need. In broad terms the aims of this new project is to generate enthusiasm amongst foundation phase learners and educators for the teaching and learning of mathematics. The project also aims to engage parents in a unique approach that draws on familiar drama, song, dance, games and rhyme to promote the acquisition of mathematics knowledge in a fun and meaningful way.

Name Our Asteroid Competition
Date: November 8, 2009
This is a chance for young South Africans to name an asteroid! The asteroid was discovered in 2005 on March the 11th by Dr. Amanda Gulbis as part of the Deep Ecliptic Survey, using the Mayall 4-m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. It was numbered as asteroid 202373, but has not been formally named. The discoverer of an asteroid has the right to propose a name. Dr. Gulbis kindly offers South African youth the opportunity to name asteroid 202373 on her behalf. Proposed names will be examined by a selection committee at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), and the competition winner's proposed name will be forwarded to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) for ratification.

Engen CSI pilots Whole School Development programme

For some years now, the English Academy of Southern Africa has been mooting the idea of producing a magazine for English teachers. The older teachers might recall a publication entitled CRUX, which English teachers valued greatly. Since its demise, there has been nothing to replace it. So, at last, the Academy has launched this publication to fill the gap.

bhp billiton Mathematics, Science and Biology Teacher Support

bhp billiton continued to support the work of CASME in the Richards Bay area by funding the provision of resources through the CASME centre at the UniZulu Science Centre and workshops for teachers. This year bhp billiton have also funded a new component, namely school-based support for selected teachers participating in the project.

Sasol Project Launch

International Organisation for Science and Technology Education (IOSTE)

The International Organization for Science and Technology Education is an international organization which aims to encourage informed debate, reflection and research on science and technology (S&T) education. IOSTE was established in 1979 to promote contact and dialogue across political and ideological borders. A key concern was that education in S&T should be a vital part of the general education of the peoples of all countries.

Flagstaff (Eastern Cape) Schools Reap Rewards

A motivated and committed group of schools and their educators in the small Eastern Cape town of Flagstaff are reaping the rewards of getting organised. Under the leadership of Fred Irumba, a local science teacher from Jikindaba Secondary School, funding from Old Mutual was secured to equip four high schools with science laboratory equipment (pictures alongside).

Carnegie Corporation Announces an $8.4 Million Investment in South Africa's Educational Future

Carnegie Corporation of New York, which has a long history of grantmaking in South Africa, made grants totalling $8,416,600 this summer to institutions that will ensure South Africa's commitment to a new and equitable education system that advances all its citizens. The grants include support for higher education, libraries and programs targeted to improving teaching and national systems of accreditation and student admissions.

Eskom Puts Spark in Education Project

A cheque handover ceremony took place at the CASME offices at the Edgewood Campus of the University of Natal in Pinetown on Friday 28 March 2003 at 12h00. The Eskom Development Foundation (ESDEF) handed over a cheque to the Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education (CASME) towards the promotion of the Jula Project.
 
Graphics Calculator Workshop Links CASME Projects

Phambili has been running workshops on the Hewlett Packard HP49G Graphics Calculator mainly for educators in the Dinaledi schools. On Thursday 27 March 2003 a workshop was held for people who would be tutoring for CASME in the professional development CASME is involved in for the Dinaledi schools and for educators participating in the KwaMashu District workshops held by CASME for that district.
 
Resource Centres

The Resource Centres Project forms the second major thrust of CASME's development intervention. It resolves the issue of under resourced schools gaining access to equipment and facilities by providing these resources in a convenient mobile way.
 
Carnegie Project - The Jula Project

The Carnegie Project or Jula Project as it has been dubbed is a 3 year initiative which is supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The project involves 350 science and mathematics education from the Empangeni and Ladysmith regions of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Absa Teacher Development Project: Umzinyathi District

This Absa funded project is completing its second year. A resource centre has been established at the Umzinyathi Environmental and Education Centre in Dundee. The project also caters for workshops and school based support.
 
Zenex Foundation Izibalo Project - Ugu District

2008 has seen the formal startup of a three-year project in the Umzumbe Circuit (Ugu District) in KwaZulu-Natal. The project has been dubbed the Izibalo Project.

CASME Trustee, Prof Vithal appointed as DVC Teaching and Learning

Trustee and University of KwaZulu-Natal representative on the CASME Board, Professor Renuka Vithal has been appointed as the founding Deputy Vice-Chancellor Teaching and Learning. This is a University-wide portfolio with the specific aim of advancing the University's Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan insofar as it relates to teaching and learning.
